From the mailbag:

Hello! My name is Elle Langevin, and I run a summer camp program for Deaf and HoH children in NH, at Windsor Mountain International Summer Camp. This year marks the 10th year that we will be offering this program, and we have made some significant changes, the most exciting being that we are now offering a 5 week intensive immersion program for beginning ASL interpreters. I am hoping that through your organization we can get the word out about this opportunity, possibly through your newsletter, and reach the students that would really benefit from this experience.

The formal announcement:

The Windsor Mountain ASL department is pleased to announce a new partnership with the University of Southern Maine, beginning summer 2008. This collaboration brings a unique opportunity to advanced ASL interpreting students. We are seeking motivated, adventurous interpreting students to participate in a 6-credit internship/practicum level class, based at Windsor Mountain's beautiful campus in NH. This class involves interpreting for 4 weeks in a variety of situations, with both Deaf children and adults.

Interns can enjoy their summer outdoors while interpreting soccer, kayaking, theatrical productions, arts and crafts, meetings and more. They will work with an experienced mentor/instructor on a daily basis, develop their ASL skills, immersing themselves in sign language and Deaf culture, and have an amazing experience, all while further developing their interpreting skills.

Nuts and Bolts -

This is a 6-credit class. Interpreters must apply and pass a two-part application process; both an ASL/Interpreting skill screening, and an aptitude screening. There are a limited number of positions available. Interpreters are on camp from July 20th to August 22nd. This includes a week of orientation. Each interpreter is allowed a 3 day off chunk (assigned) and 2 evenings a week. Interpreters must be willing to commit to this entire time.

For in-state Maine tuition, cost is $1,188.00, plus fees. For out of state tuition, cost is $3,282.00, plus fees. This includes room and board on camp. Interpreters are responsible for their own transportation. We can arrange transportation to camp from local bus/train stations and airports.

There is a $25 application processing fee.
