Hyogo Evening Skyscape , January 5, 2004

Osaka isn't really known for beautiful sunsets but I caught this wonderfully delicate skyscape this evening while setting up for some night sky photographs. Because most of my film equipment is in storage while I'm moving to Kyoto, I used my Canon EOS 10D with EF28-70mm f/2.8 L lens.

The photograph above was taken after the sun had gone down, around 6:00 pm (the sun sets at 4:30 pm right now). This is one of my favorites in the series.

As it turns out, there was too much light pollution in my area to get many star images. This was the last photograph taken. I had the TC-80N3 Remote Timer set to take photographs every 15 minutes. It took three photos each time, f/4 @ 8-15-30 seconds. This photograph was taken at 30 seconds. You can see the stars are slightly trailing, even at 30 seconds. I need to find an area with less light pollution as well as build a barndoor tracking mount if I want to do more astrophotography.

Equipment: Canon 10D; EF 28-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens; TC-80N3 Remote Timer; Velbon Carmagne tripod; Acratech ballhead.
