These photographs are of a sushi delivery man that I caught on the main intersection of Ginza-dori. You can see the sign for the new Apple Store in the background. Getting sushi hand-delivered in the Ginza area must surely cost an arm and a leg. Bicycles are one of the best ways to get around the crowded streets of Tokyo. Even the police (below) use bicycles. The large building to the rear is one of the largest and oldest department stores in Tokyo.
All of these shots are from a single roll of Kodak Tri-X film. I had it developed by my local Sakuraya lab as I don't have access to a darkroom here.

Tokyo Night Photography The Japan Photography list is a small listserv for English-speaking photographers in Japan. Soon after I had arrived in Tokyo, the listowner Juergen Sprecht posted a message inviting the members to a night photography shoot in the Shiodome/Ginza area on July 26. I had just settled into my new apartment, but it sounded like fun.
I had just bought an EF 28-70mm 'L' lens for my EOS3, so I decided to use it instead of my usual M7. It's been a while since I've used the EOS3 and getting used to a SLR took a while. The photograph below is of an old woman looking at a glass window display being remade. I stood by the display a while and watched the various people watching the display.

I love this scene of this small boy sitting in the middle of the sidewalk. At first I was worried that he was lost/abandoned. Soon after I had pulled this photo, his mother came storming towards him and yelled at him for being so slow.
There was a slight drizzle and people started to pull out their umbrellas. I immediately saw that there was a scene developing and waited in front of this fish store and waited for someone to walk by. The shutter speed was around 1/30th of a second and produced a nice blur effect.

I end the series with a typical high-rise-building-at-night photograph as well as as a snap of the gang at work (to the right). Juergen and Marty both brought tripods. My tripod was in the United States, so I did all of my work either handheld or using my small table-top tripod. |
