Mill City Museum, January 2004 St. Paul used to be known as the "Mill City" at the turn of the century. Grain came in on trains from all over the Mid-West to be processed into flour at large mill factories at the top of the Mississippi river. General Mills calls St. Paul home. Most of the larger mills went out of business by the 1960s as grain producers started to process their products locally instead of at centralized factories. The Washburn A mill was closed in 1965 and burned almost to the ground in 1995. The Minnesota Historical Society had to rebuild the entire structure and turned it into a museum. They opened it in late 2003. We visited in early 2004. Ilford HP5 gives this photo an old feel, appropriate to the period.
