I actually don't have a problem with the last image. It does look like the photographer bumped up the contrast of the image considerably and also did some dodging and burning, but there is no content falsified (i.e., cloning etc.).
Contrast enhancement and selective dodging and burning have been used by photographers (even and especially news journalists) from time immemorial. Remember when newspapers were black and white? In order to get images to appear at all, they had to be reworked. So I don't think this is inappropriate.
